What is Fear? - Extract from the poetry book 'Apologies to an Existence'

By G. Balasubramanian

As I listened to a senior doctor in an interview who commented that fear and panic about the disease causes more damage to an individual while the medical part of the disease could be addressed, I realized that a number of friends known to me have become victims of the fear though they are very mature, experienced and wise ( some for very logical reasons and in some cases for reasons not well founded). My memories went back to 1992, when in my published poetry book titled “Apologies to an Existence’ I had dealt with several human emotions including fear. Here is an extract from the book detailing the impact of fear on human lfie.

What is fear?

An animus attempting

to unlock the doors of wisdom

and steal away one’s confidence.

That which spreads

its domain like an octopus

into one’s peaceful existence

consuming it

slowly and slowly.

Fears are ‘shadows’

skillfully painted by Satan

to disfigure man!

They pass through

the stillness of life

like the will-o-the wisp,

sometimes here,

sometimes there

chasing the man

day in and day out

till he passes through the life!

Fears are ‘cannibals’

and they eat their own flesh

in a suspicious mind!

They fertilize on

the sorrow’s soil,

and let the weeds of failure

grow in an insecure mind!

They live on

sympathy’s subsidy

and stacks on its shelf

doubts and suspicions

for a future shock!

In the fear’s clock

the hands go anticlockwise!

Hence, they write

the preamble to death

in a coward’s history!

To fear

is to surrender;

To fear

is to deny;

To fear

is to misconstrue;

To fear

is to negate our existence;

To fear

is to mistrust

His omnipresence!
